Cops in court over corruption

A LIMPOPO police captain and a constable appeared in the Makhado magistrate's court yesterday for allegedly accepting a bribe to return a gun to a man declared unfit to possess a firearm.

"The captain, James Sadiki, was given bail of R500 and his case was postponed to March 28. The case against the constable was withdrawn," Lieutenant-Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said.

Sadiki faced charges of corruption, defeating the ends of justice, contravention of the firearms control act and contempt of court, he said.

William Ramonetha Madidimalo was declared unfit to possess a firearm by the Sekgosese magistrate's court in 2005 after he was found guilty of negligent handling of a firearm.

Madidimalo's firearm was confiscated and handed to the constable for safekeeping.

But later that year Sadiki allegedly ordered the constable to give him the weapon and allegedly gave it back to Madidimalo in exchange for R2500.

Madidimalo appeared in court last Tuesday on charges of illegal possession of a firearm. He was granted bail of R500 and the case was postponed to April 14.
