Zanele's project 'stalled by IFP'

SOME residents of Nongoma in Zululand are accusing the IFP-led municipality of stalling water projects initiated by former district mayor Zanele Magwaza-Msibi

While she was still district mayor of Zululand, which includes Nongoma, Vryheid and Ulundi, Magwaza-Msibi allegedly raised about R300million in The Netherlands to provide clean running water to the people of the region.

Large parts of this rural area, most of which falls under traditional leaders, were able to access clean running water for the first time as reservoirs and boreholes were constructed, allegedly as a result of Magwaza-Msibi's work.

But some residents now claim they are still without water after projects Magwaza-Msibi initiated were stalled after problems between her and the IFP surfaced.

Magwaza-Msibi was subsequently removed from her position as mayor and redeployed to the provincial legislature.

She recently severed ties with the IFP and formed the National Freedom Party.

Speaking on behalf of Holinyoka community in Nongoma, Muziyathuthuka Nkehli said their only hope for a better life and development were shattered when Magwaza-Msibi was redeployed.

"We suffered a major blow when she was removed from the mayoral position because that was the last time we experienced service delivery.

"For instance, the water project that she initiated was stalled when her troubles with the IFP started.

"We are still without water today," he said.

But Nongoma mayor Sthembiso Mathaba, who is also the secretary of the IFP's Zululand district, denied the allegation.

"There's nothing like that. The people of Holinyoka drink clean running water as I speak to you," he said.

Mathaba also denied allegations that 25 IFP councillors had joined Magwaza-Msibi's newly-formed NFP.

Mathaba said: "I can confirm that I have not received any resignation letter from any councillor. Neither the speaker or the municipal manager has received anything to that effect.

"As far as I am concerned, there's no such."

Ulundi mayor Mvuseni Luthuli has also denied allegations that 15 IFP councillors had joined the NFP.

"It's not true," he said.
