Bursary may slip through

A MATRIC pupil from Reashoma Secondary School in Protea North, Soweto, might lose out on a bursary to study for a B Com degree if the school does not release her results soon.

"I went with her to get her results and she jumped with joy since she had passed," said the father, who did want to be named for fear of victimisation of his other children.

But her joy was short-lived when the teachers told her she would not get her results because she still owed R300 in school fees.

The teenager obtained two distinctions.

"She was awarded a bursary and we should have taken the results to the University of Johannesburg," said the unemployed father.

He said he tried to explain to the teachers that he could not afford to pay R300 but they did not give him a hearing.

The Gauteng department of education said schools were not allowed to withhold results because of outstanding fees.
