Bail for arms cache suspects

INVESTIGATIONS continue into how an arms cache, which was found at a house in a Durban suburb last week, ended up in South Africa.

Police believe the weapons were originally destined for Somalia to "help in the fight against piracy" but were illegally diverted to this country.

They were found still in their transportation cases when the police raided a home in Westville.

The cache, consisting of eight .308 rifles, two 12-bore shotguns and two AM3 assault rifles with telescopic sights and silencers, as well as 592 rounds of ammunition, was found hidden in one of the rooms in the house.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said investigations into how the cache got to Durban were continuing.

The four suspects in the case, three women and a man, are out on bail.

The Pinetown magistrate's court granted the 39-year-old man R20000 bail, while the three women, two aged 20 and a third aged 28, were each granted R1000 bail.

The case was postponed to February 7.
