GAUTENG Department of Education has suspended a teacher who allegedly tried to rape a Grade 9 pupil at a Pretoria school last week
The department has confirmed having served a teacher at the Pretoria Secondary School in the central business district with a suspension letter on Friday.
He's accused of having tried to force himself on a Grade 9 pupil at the school on Monday but she managed to escape.
Several other teachers at the same school are alleged to have sexually abused pupils, and the GDE promised to investigate all the allegations.
Charles Phahlane of the GDE also told Sowetan that the letter was issued on Thursday afternoon and it reached the teacher on Friday morning.
He also said a team appointed by the GDE has already started with investigations into the allegations of attempted rape as well as all the other allegations of teachers raping pupils at school.
Captain Jan Legoabe of Pretoria Central police said the teacher had arranged to hand himself in on Friday but failed to show up.
"The investigating officer then contacted him telephonically and he promised to report at the police station tomorrow (today) morning with his lawyer," said Legoabe.
A number of pupils told Sowetan that rape was rife at the school but many (pupils) feared to report their ordeal because they were either threatened or promised money or a pass at the end of the year if they did not tell. They said some victims were bribed with airtime by the perpetrators while others thought reporting the perpetrators as a futile exercise since the school principal would not take any action.
Sowetan is in possession of a list of names of alleged perpetrators. The pupils said the perpetrators always made remarks such as "mmm ... sexy legs", "nice body", and "juicy lips", when they met in corridors or school grounds.
The investigating officer visited the school last week to collect more statements.
