MEC launches probe of whopping pay hikes

KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs Nomusa Dube has tasked a team to investigate pay increases for officials at Abaqulusi municipality in Vryheid.

Sowetan reported yesterday that the municipality had agreed to increase the pay of officials with a package of almost R5million.

The council passed a resolution to increase packages of the municipal manager from R895420 to R950000; chief financial officer from R625695 to R770000; director: technical services from R724953 to R768000; director: planning from R636705 to R700000; director: cooperate services from R640000 to R700000 and director: community services from R571950 to R700000.

Dube said what was alarming was that in some instances the increases boiled down to a whopping 23percent.

She said the municipality was faced with service delivery backlogs and a series of public protests over basic services and poor infrastructure.

The unfortunate development in Vryheid comes hot on the heels of a directive by the MEC that there should be no salary increments or bonuses for councillors and municipal officials in local authorities with perpetual poor performance and service delivery backlogs.
