City's big fight with rats

DESPITE the eThekwini municipality sending out a call to "curb rodent infestation", they insist that the hairy pests pose "no cause for concern" in the city.

Deputy head of communicable diseases in the eThekwini municipality's health unit, Dr Ayo Olowolagba, said: "The city is facing numerous dilemmas regarding rodent infestation."

Olowolagba said they undertook routine surveys to monitor rodent infestation and placed control measures in areas where there was an infestation.

He added that some privately owned derelict buildings within the city were also to blame for attracting the vermin.

A vector control team has been appointed by the health department to try to keep the rats at bay.

To report cases of illegal dumping call the eThekwini municipality on 031-311-3555 or 031-311-8804.
