Matric cheats to be banned

MATRIC pupils who cheat in their exams will be banned for three years. Basic Education Department spokesperson Granville Whittle warned: "If you are caught cheating, you will not be allowed to write exams for three years. You will also be charged criminally."

Whittle said security measures had been put into place to ensure that there won't be any cheating this year.

He said from Monday to December 3, 198 examination papers will be written in 39 subjects at 8000 examination centres. Pupils will sit for the information technology paper 2 and computer application technology paper 2 on Monday.

This year 642691 pupils registered to write the exams. This is an increase of 22980 compared with last year. There are 562473 full-time candidates and 80218 are part time.

In Mpumalanga the department has taken over the management of examinations. Ten officials have been deployed from the national department to lead the process. Last year, five papers - mathematics papers one and two, physical science papers one and two and accounting - were leaked in Mpumalanga before the start of the exams. The papers were subsequently replaced.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and Mpumalanga MEC for education Regina Mhaule dissolved the province's exam board. The board was replaced with specialists from KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Free State to help run the board.

"Exam papers are usually printed seven days before the exam," Whittle said. After printing they are delivered to district offices and schools. The school has to have a strong room to safeguard the papers and the principal and the chief invigilator are the only people allowed in the room."

Marking of the examination scripts will start in all provinces other than Gauteng from December 4 to December 15. Gauteng has adopted a staggered approach and will start marking on November 19. Results will be released on January 6. The closing date for applications for remarks and rechecks of the exam scripts is January 21. The closing date for applications for supplementary examinations is January 24. Certificates will be released in May.
