Census 2011 to be major task

STATISTICS South Africa (Statssa) yesterday launched its biggest undertaking yet in Census 2011.

Statssa will mobilise an army of 120000 field workers with 30000 supervisors to do a headcount of everybody in SA on October 9 and 10 next year.

"The poor, the rich, homeless, educated, employed, sick, the young and the old ... all people in South Africa will be counted," statistician general Pali Lehohla said. "We seek to know you, we seek to understand you - you count."

"We want to know your age; income; if there have been deaths in the household; your access to services and communication ... we will know South Africa and its needs.

"We will know whether South Africa is making progress or not. We will know what needs to be done," Lehohla said.

Minister in the Presidency for the National Planning Commission Trevor Manuel said on a prerecorded video that a census helps governments take proper decisions.

He said he would appeal to all religious institutions, sporting clubs, trade unions and teachers to spread the message about the census and encourage people to open their doors to Statssa field workers.

The statisticians will not consider if someone is an illegal immigrant or not.

A poster of the person who will be visiting homes will be put up in communities. The person will be local and have an identification card and households can call the census office to verify their identification.
