Woman's headless body exhumed

LIMPOPO police are investigating a case of violation of a dead person after a headless corpse was exhumed from a vandalised grave at HaMakuya village in Domboni, east of Thohoyandou.

The exhumation was conducted on Saturday after the family sought police intervention to probe the circumstances surrounding the vandalised grave of their relative.

The body of Dakalo Lambani, a woman who was buried on August 21 after she died of an unidentified illness, was found without a head, palms, right breast, and right hand.

The police said grave diggers discovered that the tombstone and grave appeared to have been tampered with.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the coffin was removed and that body parts had been cut off.

Warrant Officer Mashudu Madida said the exhumation was conducted on instructions from the family. He said this was after a case of grave violation was opened.

He said a forensic investigation was under way and that no one had been arrested in connection with the matter.

The deceased's mother, Olive Maudu, said they were disturbed and traumatised when they saw the body without the head and certain other parts.

"We have been badly hurt. We thought Dakalo would rest in peace but criminals do not want her soul to rest," Maudu said.

She said the casket they had used to bury the woman had been replaced with a "cheaper" coffin.
