Pupils' reading skills impress officials

PUPILS at Addington Primary School in KwaZulu-Natal impressed education officials yesterday with their reading skills at the school's event to mark the beginning of National Reading Week.

The pupils read poems, short stories and essays that they had written themselves. The officials, led by the department's superintendent general Cassius Lubisi, visited the school to mark the week of reading and were blown away when children, some in Grade 2, read books from cover to cover with confidence and expression.

Seven-year-old Azola Lukhozi is an avid reader and one of the school's best. At Grade 2, his reading skills are amazing for someone his age.

Azola said: "Books are my friends. They fascinate me, and not only do I get knowledge from them but they also keep me busy and entertained.

"I read at least two books a day. I have read so many I cannot even count."

He encouraged other children to read, read and read more instead of watching television.

"I have read so many books, and I see myself writing my own in a few years' time," he said with a smile.

Another pupil, Peter Aclavio, said reading has changed his life in a way that books have become his best friends and a second teacher inside and outside the classroom.

"More and more reading has taught me to read with expression. My favourite book is the Bible, which teaches me about life. I also draw inspiration and my faith from the Bible.

"Books have taught me to control my anger and emotions, and have taken me to places I have never been to," he said with pride.

Lubisi, who also shared a page of reading with youngsters, said he had been overwhelmed by the children's reading skills.

"Wow, I am very impressed to see that you boys and girls enjoy reading so much. I thought I was the only genius at school, but what I have seen here today has blown my mind away. Please keep up this beautiful culture."

For the duration of the National Reading Week, pupils are encouraged to read and live through the culture of reading. They are also encouraged to get their parents and family members reading as well.
