Winnie slams dissent at Makume funeral

ANC BIGWIGS at the weekend tore into their party's dissenters at the funeral of veteran activist Yvonne Malethola Makume

The funeral was held at Khuma Stadium in Stilfontein, North West.

Makume was chairperson of the portfolio committee on public works, roads and transport in the North West government. She died in a car accident on August 31.

The funeral was attended by, among others, ANC deputy general secretary Thandi Modise, NEC members Winnie Madikizela Mandela, Lumka Yengeni, Martin Sebakwane and speaker of the North West provincial legislature Nono Maloyi.

Maloyi said there were those ANC members who claimed they were "defusing factions" in the province - while they were the ones who perpetuated them.

Madikizela-Mandela expressed her disappointment in the North West ANC.

"I don't know this ANC where people are making remarks about the ANC that are hurtful. Nobody can speak negatively at a funeral when the family is mourning the death of their beloved daughter."

She said Makume was the only member of the ANC Women's League's executive who stood by her and testified for her during her trial some years ago.

Madikizela-Mandela also promised to help "clean up" the province.

"You can see poverty even when you drive around this place and this is not what we fought for as the ANC."
