Foreign suspect shot dead

A ZIMBABWEAN wanted for crimes including armed robbery was allegedly shot and killed during an attempt to arrest him in Musina, Limpopo, on Monday night.

Police said the 37-year-old man was wanted for crimes ranging from armed robbery, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said the police received information that the suspect was hiding in the bushes next to Matombo Lodge in Musina.

He said the suspect allegedly resisted arrest and hit a police officer with a stone during the attempt to apprehend him.

The suspect is also alleged to have tried to stab the officer with a knife.

"Acting in self-defence, our member drew his firearm and shot the suspect in the chest.

"He died instantly," Ramatseba said, adding that the case had been forwarded to the Independent Complaints Directorate for further investigation.

"A case of murder has also been opened against our member for further investigation," he said.

The name of the deceased would only be released once his next of kin had been notified, Ramatseba said. The incident happened at Musina township's extension 2.
