How sugar cane murder suspect was caught

Serial killer accused Thozamile Taki was arrested after investigators traced the cellphone he allegedly took from one of his 13 victims, the High Court in Ramsgate heard today

"Cellphone experts helped us to locate Nosisa Nozozo's cellphone who was also missing," police Captain Mthandeni Nyawose told the court.

"We found Dunyiswa Daniso in possession of the phone in Stanger."

Daniso told police she got the phone from Taki, her brother-in-law.

"She [Daniso] then took us to her sister, Vusile Daniso [Taki's wife] in Port St Johns who helped us to locate Taki," said Nyawose.

Taki was arrested at 2am on September 24 in 2007 in Welbedacht near Durban.

He is accused of killing 13 women and dumping their bodies in sugarcane plantations in Umzinto in KwaZulu-Natal and in tea plantations in Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape.

His girlfriend Hlengiwe Nene has been charged as an accessory to  the 13 robberies.

Nyawose said investigators found clothes, blankets, and bank and  clothing shop cards during the arrest.

Taki had admitted giving the cellphone to Daniso.

Both Danisos were State witnesses, the court heard.

The State alleges Taki lured his victims by promising them jobs at different companies.

The court was briefly disrupted when a relative of Thandeka Mtebeni, one of the victims, cried hysterically inside the court during the proceedings. She was quickly taken outside by orderlies.
