Mkhize says area is lagging behind on BEE

KWAZULU-NATAL was determined to aggressively drive its targets on government's economic empowerment policies.

This was the stern message from Premier Zweli Mkhize after noting with disappointment that the province was lagging far behind others in the implementation of Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment .

He said companies in KwaZulu-Natal were failing to adhere to BBBEE and were flouting the policy.

The premier is also the chairperson of the KZN BBBEE Council.

Mkhize said the council had conducted research in 2008 on the status of BBBEE in the province within the private sector.

"The findings of the research clearly show that some progress has been made.

"But, there is still a long way to go before the ideals of the province's BEE strategy are achieved."

Although the study was conducted on the private sector, many of the dimensions of transformation measured were equally applicable in the public sector such as preferential procurement, employment equity, and skills development, Mkhize said.
