Hotel workers go on strike over 'unpaid' World Cup tips

WORKERS at the Protea Landmark Hotel in Polokwane are on strike, accusing the management of refusing to pay them money left by the Algerian team in tips after the World Cup.

The workers accuse hotel facilities general manager Louise Welman of refusing to give them the money. They claim they were entitled to R52135 which was allegedly left by the Algerian team.

The team stayed at the hotel on June 12 and had paid the money in US dollars. The workers showed Sowetan a payment slip they claimed was from the Algerian team.

They claimed they were never shown the amount of tips left by France, Greece and Paraguay, who also stayed at the hotel during the tournament.

They claim shop steward Matome Ramothwala was suspended by Welman after he questioned why they were never given the money.

They also say the management accused Ramothwala of "knowing too much".

"There is no transparency in the manner in which things are done at this hotel," the workers' representative James Maluleke said.

The workers are also demanding a 9percent salary increase and that the management provide transport to their homes when they knock off late or work night shift.

Welman referred Sowetan's enquiries to the company's head office in Cape Town.

Company spokesperson Danny Bryer said they were working towards an amicable solution to the workers' complaints.
