The KwaZulu-Natal side won 6-5 on penalties to go to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup after the scores were level on 2-2 after regulation time.

Swallows were defending champions.

AmaZulu coach Neil "Mokoko" Tovey was happy with the result but dissatisfied with the pitch.

"It was very heavy," the experienced former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana captain said.

Marc van Heerden was red-carded for a foul on Auguston Leonard. "We still did well."

Tovey's opposite number, Rainer Zobel, blamed his charges for making things difficult for themselves.

"The first half was one of the worst displays I've ever seen from my players. We were playing long balls and even their number 28 (Pere Ariweriyai) was laughing at us," Zobel said.

AmaZulu led througha Ntokozo Sikhakhane header after a good cross from Simangaliso Biyela in the first half.

Lefa Tsutsulupa's corner came off the upright and AmaZulu defender Van Heerden scored an own goal in an attempt to clear.

Morgan Shivambu scored the second for Swallows while substitute Sandile Gumede levelled matters sending the game to penalties.

Swallows Phumelele Bhengu, the striker-cum-rightback, missed his spot kick while all other takers converted.
