THE Head of the Anglican Church in South Africa, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, and Gift of the Givers founder Imtiaz Sooliman are heading for earthquake devastated Haiti.

Sowetan spoke to Sooliman yesterday before the delegation was to board their plane in Miami in the US. He said Reverand Robert Butterworth and Archbishop Katherine Jesserts Schori of the US were also on the goodwill trip.

"We are headed for Haiti to offer our concrete and personal support to people who have been traumatised by the quake. Our mission is also to offer our goodwill to the Archbishop of Haiti," Makgoba said.

Haiti's Archbishop Zache's wife is recovering from injuries sustained during the earthquake.

Meanwhile, Gift of the Givers has collected 500 tons of relief goods. Sooliman said supplies would be transported to Haiti in two weeks.

Telkom handed over a cheque for R500000 to Sooliman on February 16 at the company's headquarters. This cash injection follows Oasis Crescent Trust's single biggest donation of R5million.

The SABC has raised more than R2million from cash donations, pledges and SMS lines from a Haiti telethon launched on January 28.
