LOC looks back on a great year

AS 2009 nears its end, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) top brass cannot be faulted for looking back on the past 11 months with pride.

They have silenced doubting Thomases across the globe by showing that South Africa has the ability to host a successful 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter was highly impressed with the Confederations Cup in June, while pointing out that there is always room for improvement.

Second, the LOC delivered another great event in the form of the World Cup final draw in Cape Town on December 4.

LOC chairman Irvin Khoza said while they had successfully delivered the match venues and final draw, the biggest challenge was to get South Africans to buy tickets.

"We made it clear it will be an African World Cup, that is why we are calling on all South Africans to buy tickets in large numbers," he said.

"We have to support Bafana Bafana and the other five African countries: Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Cameroon and Algeria. Tickets for the other teams like the US, England and Brazil are doing very well. We also want to see many people attending the games where African teams play."

Khoza commended the PSL for accommodating Bafana Bafana's preparations by agreeing to speed up the 2009-10 season.

"I thank the chairpersons of all the clubs who supported Bafana Bafana by playing three games within seven days to finish the season early.

"We also want to thank the players for their sacrifices."

Khoza said the LOC was grateful to the government, the sponsors and all South Africans for rallying round the preparations.

"We also want to thank all the clubs, administrators, supporters and the media.

"Your support and cooperation is highly appreciated," he said.
