Els to miss this year's Nedbank Golf tourney

GOLF lovers had better pencil December 3-6 into their diaries as those are the dates when the world's top players will be heading to Sun City for the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge.

GOLF lovers had better pencil December 3-6 into their diaries as those are the dates when the world's top players will be heading to Sun City for the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge.

Speculation surrounds the make-up of the field with the only confirmed entrants being last year's winner Henrik Stenson from Sweden and rising local star and winner of this year's Sunshine Tour Order of Merit Richard Sterne.

Invitations also go to the winners of this year's four Major championships (Argentinian Angel Cabrera at the Masters; American Lucas Glover at the US Open; American Stewart Cink at the British Open; and Korean YE Yang at the PGA championship).

It's unfortunate that Ernie Els, with three Nedbank titles under his belt, has opted to miss this year' event. Other golfers who might crack an invite to this year's event include Spain's Sergio Garcia, England's Wayne Westwood, Americans Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk while local boys Rory Sabbatini, James Kingston, Trevor Immelman and Retief Goosen are all very familiar with the famous Gary Player Country Club, where the event is played. The final field will be announced on Wednesday.
