Experts to probe high number of accidents

EXPERTS from the Roads Traffic Management Corporation in Pretoria have been sent to the N1 road between Polokwane and Louis Trichardt.

EXPERTS from the Roads Traffic Management Corporation in Pretoria have been sent to the N1 road between Polokwane and Louis Trichardt.

This comes after the death of Limpopo MEC for public works Pandelani Ramagoma on Monday morning.

The officials were dispatched on Tuesday by the National Department of Roads and Transport.

The experts are set to complete their evaluation before the end of next week and hand over their findings to the department for action.

Department spokesperson Boiki Tsedu said the experts would suggest measures to help curb the escalating road accidents.

He said the department was extremely disturbed by the escalating number of accidents on the road and wanted to act swiftly to address the situation.

Among high profile government officials who have lost their lives on the notorious road are acting head of department for local government and housing Mihlothi Hetisane, senior manager in the department of public works Elvis Mavuso and former ambassador to Indonesia Norman Mashabane.

The accident that claimed Ramagoma's life happened barely a week after the department conducted a cleansing ceremony with church pastors and senior government officials on the road.

Concerned residents have suggested that the department instals robots at flash points while others called for the deployment of more traffic officers.

Businesswoman Doris Mphelo of Botlokwa said putting up more road signs and educating motorists was the best remedy.

Meanwhile, the memorial service for Ramagoma will be held today at the Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane. The service starts at 12pm.
