THE police are setting up a programme to protect women from human traffickers during the World Cup next year, President Jacob Zuma told a Vryheid audience on Sunday.

He said the government had noted the concerns of women's groups that the event might create opportunities for human trafficking.

"We want this to be the best World Cup ever," President Zuma said.

"We will intensify efforts to ensure that criminals do not take advantage of the 2010 World Cup for trafficking or any other international crime."

Women's Minister Nolu-thando Mayende-Sibiya said: "The rape and murder of women and girl children cannot be allowed to continue."
