The VW scirocco is a beauty that stands out without competing with the Golf GTI.

It is a niche make that is expected to gain popularity over time. At first I was not sure how I felt about the latest addition to the VW stable. Everything changed when I recently received my test Scirocco.

The interior is unmistakeably Volkswagen, but the design has the Italian touch to it.

The coupé styling brought something that many a VW customer longed for. The interior is elegant but not overdone.

The cockpit environment has ergonomical maturity. Especially pleasing to the touch and in visual appearance are the finely designed door trim panels with their distinctive interior door handles.

Gauges and instruments are also laid out intuitively and clearly. The centre console, with its controls arranged up high, exhibits a welcome user-friendly layout.

Located beneath the two central air outlets is the audio system.

The cabin space is not bad for a coupé. The 2,0-litre DSG engine did what was expected of a VW.

The beautifully styled Scirocco combines a high level of everyday utility with high-end design.

The Scirocco's front-end exhibits a completely new Volkswagen design language.

The powerful appearance of the Scirocco is reinforced by 17-inch wheels. Standard features are 17-inch alloy wheels, height-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, leather steering wheel, split folding rear seatbacks, power windows, semi-automatic climate control ("Climatic"), speed-dependent power steering, ESP, six airbags, daytime running light switch, multifunctional display and of course a sport chassis.

The hidden B pillar, the line of windows that ascends steeply toward the rear, and the very distinctive C pillar are features that convey a very independent presence and dynamic together with the seemingly endless roof line.

In the rear area, an integrated roof spoiler adds to the dynamics and applies additional downforce at the rear axle.

The sculpted taillights, which are very distinctive when the car is viewed from the side, offer a very special counterpoint.

The 2,0-litre petrol engine chucks out 147kW of power while torque stands at 280Nm. The car is priced at R336500.
