Bethlehem Mathye, of the Krugersdorp flying squad, was shot in the chest and died on the scene.
Police said they received a tip-off that four suspects entered a shop and pointed the owner with a gun and demanded money.
The suspects took cash, cigarettes, groceries and toiletries valued at R15000 and fled in a vehicle.
Police said the driver lost control of the car and it overturned. T hree suspects fled on foot.
One suspect was trapped in the car and was arrested .
The other three suspects were pursued and they fired shots at the police.
Police retaliated and a suspect was shot and killed on the spot. It was later established that the dead man was a police officer.
