The Falcons improved their position on the Absa Currie Cup log when they beat Western Province 38-32 in an exciting game at Bosman Stadium in Brakpan on Friday night.

It was one of the outstanding performances from the Ekurhuleni outfit since the inception of the competition.

They moved from bottom to sixth on the log with 11 points in five rounds.

From the onset the home side showed aggression as they camped in their opposition's 22m area with attacking runs and deadly driving mauls.

After surprising the Falcons to lead 15-14 lead in the 33rd minute, basic mistakes and poor handling let the Western Cape side down.

The Falcons capitalised on their blunders and went on to take a 28-18 lead at the break through Nicky Kritzinger's try, Len Olivier's conversion, Dewald Pretorius' try and conversion.

In the second spell the visitors huffed and puffed but found the Falcons defence unyielding.

It was coach Allister Coetzee and his troops' second successive defeat to one of the smaller unions. A fortnight ago they lost 21-20 to Griquas in Wellington.

Meanwhile, defending champions the Cheetahs mauled the Sharks 31-9 in Bloemfontein while the Bulls moved to the top of the log with a 26-10 victory over the Kavaliers in Wellington.

In the last match of the weekend, the Lions beat Griquas 36-32 in Kimberley.
