REnault goes for rugged terrain
People often don't want to talk about those embarrassing moments in their lives, the so- called dumb moments, when we do things that make us doubt our intelligence for a moment.
I recently found myself in a similar situation - the funniest or the dumbest road tests, whichever way you prefer to look at it.
I was driving from my house to the office in Industria, Johannesburg, when suddenly my Renault Scenic Navigator started losing power near Vodaworld in Midrand.
I quickly pulled over to the side of the road to investigate what was wrong. I tried a few times to restart the engine, but nothing happened. Oh No! I thought to myself, another Renault problem. A good car like the Scenic Navigator wouldn't just do that.
I made the embarrassing call to the fleet guys. Within minutes I received a call from Renault head office. Minutes later, another call from Renault Midrand, the nearest dealer. I was told that a technician would be dispatched shortly. I waited patiently for the technician, who ultimately arrived. His name was Jan.
Jan got out of his car and greeted me with a smile. Obviously, a journalist sitting on the side of the road in a test car is viewed as a "crisis" by the manufacturer involved.
Jan jumped into the car to investigate. I still remember Jan's face and voice. He politely asked me: "Have you got petrol madam?"
There was nothing wrong with the French creation, but something was horribly wrong with me.
Oh no, that was it, my dumbest moment. I am not going to bore you with details of how I missed noticing the petrol gauge going down, until it got me into that situation.
The Scenic Navigator is a perfect mommy's taxi. No hassles. It has a 2,0-litre 16V engine that throws out an average 98kW @ 5 500 rpm and torque is 191Nm.
Linked to a six-speed manual transmission, the powerplant drives the front wheels.
The list of safety equipment includes multiple airbags, Isofix child seat mountings, head restraints adaptable for child use at the rear, and inertia reel seatbelts with pretensioners.
So you thought it would not happen to me. Have a good laugh.
The Scenic Navigator is priced at R238000.
