Durandt is riding crest of the wave

Nick Durandt is riding the crest of a financial wave here as a boxing mentor/manager while others are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Durandt confirmed this yesterday, ending what has always been speculation based on the number of SA, world and International champions attached to his Bree Street Gym in downtown Johannesburg.

the gym boasts about 55 professional fighters. None of them goes back home in December for Christmas without having donned the gloves. Others fight three or four times a year.

His fighters rate him as the best manager who negotiates fair purses for them. National champions at his gym are paid nothing less than R50000 for their first defences, while champions from other trainers get that amount either when they bid for their fourth or fifth defences.

Durandt's IBO champions are paid more than R200000, whereas others would die for that amount of money. WBF holders from Durandt's gym get more than R150000, with his WBC International champions earning more than R50000.

"I've been in the game for 20 years and I cannot apologise for my success," said the man who is guaranteed a 25 percent share every time his charge steps into the ring.

"My day starts at 4am. That is when I organise fights for my fighters who employed me to do that and also hone their skills. I work 335 days a year and spend only 30 with my family. I am loyal to my promoters, but they all know that if a promoter does not deliver I go elsewhere."

He is also the busiest mentor around. That is because he works with most of the country's promoters. His other boxers - Hawk Makepula, Daniel Bruwer and Zolani Marali - will be in action on May 31.

Makepula will face Zolile Mbityi for the vacant IBO super flyweight title, Bruwer defends his SA light heavyweight title against Anthony van Niekerk and Marali puts his WBF junior lightweight title against Godfrey Nzimande.
