Mama Angel once more came to the rescue of pupils who needed school uniforms.
Sowetan donated R5000 worth of uniforms to the City of Hope Aftercare Academy in Riverlea Extension, Johannesburg.
The City of Hope Academy was founded by Pastor Rennie Julius of the City of Hope Ministries. Julius realised that children needed a place where they could study and do their homework in a safe environment. It takes in pupils from grades 1 to 12.
"Our youngsters are faced with so many challenges. It is here that they are taught life skills and are made to understand how special they are as individuals," says a statement by the centre.
"All things are possible, it takes hard work, perseverance and some more hard work. "Tough times never last, tough people do and only the strong shall survive."
The academy was launched in 2006 with 25 pupils, with an average pass rate of 23 percent. The 2007 intake boasted an 89 percent pass with 72 pupils.
The aftercare is manned by parents who volunteer their time and is open from Monday to Thursday. The volunteers serve lunch, tea, coffee and juice.
"Your generosity has seen some 70 learners go to school with pride as they boast about their new uniforms and shoes.
"May God's blessings and fullness continue to rain on you and your leadership team," said Julius.
"We need sponsors to pay a little stipend for the volunteers who are mothers in the community and are unemployed.
"We need blankets. It is never enough to give one blanket to a family with several members. We need about 500 this year to make a difference.
"We would also be happy to get computers as we are trying to expand the centre and offer more courses."
