SACP, Cosatu cannot choose ANC leadership

The ANC constitution allows only its members to nominate, elect and vote for its leadership at a conference.

The ANC constitution allows only its members to nominate, elect and vote for its leadership at a conference.

Also, 90 percent of delegates come from its branches, elected at the organisation's annual general meetings. The rest of the delegates are from its national executive committee, provincial executive committees, youth and women's leagues and ex-officio NEC members.

The SACP, Cosatu and Sanco cannot decide who should lead the ANC. Drawing up preference lists is mischievous and opportunistic.

ANC members know their duties and obligations and welcome lobbying on any issue that seeks to advance the democratic revolution. We will therefore refuse and resist spoon-feeding of names.

Cosatu wasted the opportunity to deliberate constructively on workers issues at their recent conference by pontificating on matters outside its mandate. It is unfortunate that all the venomous things said by Zwelinzima Vavi and Blade Nzimande about the ANC will remain unchallenged in their structures because of propaganda and indoctrination.

We ANC members must combat the propaganda and defend our organisation's policies. Cosatu and the SACP are being destructive by urging their members to swell the ANC to turn it into a socialist movement. The ANC will emerge victorious in December and continue to serve the people.
