Change SA's name as well

The decision by the Tshwane metro council to change the name Pretoria to Tshwane is welcomed.

The decision by the Tshwane metro council to change the name Pretoria to Tshwane is welcomed.

Though Freedom Front Plus and Afriforum have been given an interdict temporarily stopping the renaming, I feel the time has come for the city to have a name that does not represent the apartheid regime.

Before I am accused of being a racist, let me explain that I am anti-racism.

My support for the renaming is not because I am against Afrikaners as people, but I feel that the city does not deserve the name Pretoria.

After whom was Pretoria named? It is a shame that 13 years after democracy, we still have such names. As an African, I feel it is an insult to us that we have the name Pretoria which is named after a man whose regime was brutal to black people.

I think that the council should also change street names like Pretorius, Visagie, Schoeman, Prinsloo and Van der Walt.

Not all Afrikaner street names should be replaced, but there should be some streets that have the names of black people.

Tshwane must remain the capital. We should also consider changing the name of the country because South Africa is not an African name.

Motlatsi Lebea, Tshwane
