Sacob, Eskom meet on power outages

The South African Chamber of Business (Sacob) said yesterday that it met with Eskom chief executive Thulani Gcabashe on Wednesday to discuss problems surrounding the recent power outages.

Issues discussed included timeous communications that would allow businesses to be in some state of readiness, and possible redress for losses incurred, the business chamber said.

"Sacob believes that for the foreseeable future, regular 'sitreps' should be provided to businesses as to planned Eskom maintenance- repair activities that might pose a recurrence of the outage problems of last week," it said.

Last Thursday the country was hit by a series of power outages. Eskom said that it had experienced unplanned outages of 4600 megawatts because of technical generating plant problems, which happened at a time when Eskom was already running at a low reserve because of maintenance.

Eskom said it had to shed up to 9percent of the demand by implementing load shedding, which is a controlled way of rotating the available capacity between all customers at times when the demand is greater than what can be supplied. - I-Net Bridge
