In the latest tale, a grandmother's encouragement, and the help of a lucky draw competition, has presented a great opportunity to a young, aspiring soccer great.
Domenic Mfusi is a 13-year-old from Kagiso in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, who lives with his grandmother and his three aunts.
He knew nothing about Shona Khona until his grandmother brought home a can of Airwick air spray that had a competition token on it. Domenic's granny read the rules and suggested that the lad enter the competition.
Domenic sent in his details and the lucky number he found on a Reckitt Benkiser product by SMS - and his was the name that came up in the lucky draw.
"I love soccer and was excited when my grandmother told me the news about attending the camp," said Domenic.
This young man is inspired by Kaizer Chiefs' Emmanuel Ngobese and by Benedict Vilakazi's skills and discipline.
Domenic attended the camp last month at the Safa-Transnet Soccer School of Excellence (SSE) in Elandsfontein, near Johannesburg.
He and 74 others were given top-class coaching by former soccer star Marks Maponyane, and by SSE head coaches Mandla Mazibuko and Dan Malisela.
He was picked at the camp, along with five other players, to fly to Brazil in July to the world-famous Sao Paulo Football Academy for a week of cultural experiences and intense coaching.
The other five are Moalusi Mathe, 16, from Thabanchu; Bongani Mocksin, 13, from Uitenhage; Jerry Nkwana, 15, from Mamelodi; Mzwandile Magqwaka, 13, from Gugulethu and Lwando Bhebhetha, 14, from Uitenhage.
"I'm very happy that I won the trip. Thank you to my grandmother for helping me enter," said Domenic.
Domenic is following in the footsteps of other Shona Khona recruits who have been to Brazil and are currently gaining immensely from the experience.
These are Tyroane Sandows, who returns to Brazil today for a year-long stay at the famous Sao Paulo FC Academy, Thabiso Makena and Sfiso Mnguni, who has been admitted to the Premier Soccer League club Silver Stars.
