Shembe cancels ANC membership
Leader of the Shembe church, Phakama Shembe, is leaving the ANC because it doesn't respect and love the illiterate and the unschooled.
His spokesman, Pat Dooms, told Sowetan yesterday that arrangements were under way for Shembe to return his membership card to the ANC.
Shembe and several of his followers joined the ANC at its head office in Johannesburg last year.
"Shembe's people are not highly educated. They are largely from rural areas. Inkosi Shembe is one of them. He's illiterate," said Dooms.
Shembe believed that the ANC served the elite and the party leaders had no intention of improving the conditions of the poor and uneducated.
"This observation was made by Shembe based on his experience as a card-carrying ANC member."
The ANC refused to comment.
