School girl (8) starts own clothing label

AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD girl's love for fashion has inspired her to start her own clothing label.

Unakho Mpulu of East London in Eastern Cape launched her kiddies line - Unakho Designs - last Saturday, her birthday.

The Grade 2 pupil at Hudson Park Primary School treated her friends to a fashion show, which featured items from her clothing line.

Unakho Designs offers scarves, hats and other accessories designed by her for children her age.

Unakho's father, Thando, said his daughter's love for clothes showed when she refused to be dressed by her mother while in Grade R.

"She started dressing herself, doing her own hair and getting hair accessories," he said.

"She won a picture competition in Grade R and we could see she loved art. We bought her a doll and she would dress it up all the time."

Mpulu said in her spare time Unakho would draw pictures of clothing items and hair bands.

"We decided to encourage Unakho because we could see she's into fashion. This year we decided to hold a fashion party on her eighth birthday. She was over the moon. That's how her clothing line came into existence," Mpulu said

"We took her designs to a tailor where they were put together. From what we understand, now she wants to focus on accessories," he said.

Unakho said her love for fashion started when her teacher asked what each pupil wanted to become: "I said I wanted to be a fashion designer. I don't think I will ever change my mind about that. What I wear is what I want, but sometimes I cannot get some clothing items because they are expensive."

Unakho said for now she would only make clothes for children and would create items for older people at a later stage.

"The theme for the launch was 'Be stylish, that's the way to go', and I live by that. Every day I make sure I wear something stylish and look nice," Unakho said.

Mpulu said he would not pressure his daughter into designing more clothes but would nurture her talent. "We don't intend selling her clothes.

We won't push her because children's lives evolve and I don't want her to make any commitment in case she decides she does not want to be in the fashion industry anymore," the happy father said.

The scarves and hats Unakho designed were given to her guests during the launch.
