Race to develop powerboaters

POWERBOAT Racing South Africa is overseeing a bold campaign to nurture future professionals in the sport among youths from disadvantaged backgrounds in Free State.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee-affiliated Powerboat Racing South Africa (PBRSA) in collaboration with the office of Free State Premier, Sowetan, the Ngwathe and Fezile Dabi municipalities and the Phakisa Major Sport Events and Development Corporation are involved in the latest campaign.

Seeking to address the scarcity of powerboat racing pilots from previously disadvantaged communities - though Steven Zungu of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, is one of the few who is coming up through the ranks - the PBRSA is also grooming Free State youngsters Siphiwe Sam, Terence Nkonyeni, Panya Phadi and Modise Molefe, who boast semi-professional status.

Sixteen youths from towns in the Ngwathe municipality - Parys, Heilbron, Vredefort, Edinville and Koppies - have already participated in a developmental race in March, that was won by Sibongile Beyaphi, Sabata Malejoane and Branden Naude.

The 13 other beneficiaries are Sebusiso Madona, Bongani Mvulane, Lebo Malebo, Serame Sekoboto, Puleng Direko, Modibedi Thoote, Simon Theletsane, Fikile Sephiri, Bafana Dlamini, Rivonia Tshehlo, Nthabiseng Chabalala, Rebone Thabane and France Sadie.

These 16 youths are due to participate in a training programme, with five other youngsters from the Metsimaholo, Mafube and Moqhaka municipalities.

The programme now boasts 31 beneficiaries in total, each with a chance of developing into future star powerboat racers, or at least gaining the confidence to take on the world in many other social, cultural, sporting, or academic pursuits.

They will participate in a developmental competition at the Parys Golf and Country Estate in Parys on November 12 and 13, where they will share the limelight with senior professionals racing under the auspices of the PBRSA's F1 Grand Prix calendar races.
