Poets Celebrate the living legends at Playhouse

THE umkhosi Wezinkondlo Zama-Afrika, a poet festival that is aimed at celebrating the living legends in this field, will be staged at Playhouse, Durban on September 22.

Popular local and international poets who have done remarkably well will share the stage with upcoming artists to empower them.

Professor Otty Nxumalo, academic, cultural activist and the adviser will share the importance of poetry.

King Goodwill Zwelithini ka Bhekuzulu praise poet Buzetsheni Mdletshe and Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s poet Phakath’ kwempi Buthelezi, Nazareth Baptist Church praise poet Themba Masinga will recite some of the popular poets that were made to remind people about building the nation.

Organiser of the event Bongani Mavuso says he decided to organize the event mainly because he believes young people can learn a lot from these poets.

He said the project was inspired by the King Goodwill Zwelithini praise poet Buzetsheni Mdletshe who wanted to encourage people about the art of telling stories.

“Over the years there has been a decline of indigenous languages praise singers. However, as a nation I still believe there is still much we can do in order to overcome this problem,” he says.
Mavuso add that what people may not realize is that the depth of poetry in KZN province lies in the deep traditional story telling.

He says the event will also give an opportunity to five of the best poets from the province who will perform the best poems in isiZulu written by the late Dr B.W Vilakazi and Professor Mazisi Kunene.

Other poets expected to grace the occasion will include Zone 14’s Masoja Msiza, Siyabonga Mungose and Isishimane.

The programme will be directed by Ukhozi fm’s Dudu Khoza and renowned comedian Pastor Mjosty.

Umkhosi Wezinkondlo Zama – Afrika  at 6pm and tickets are available at computicket for R60.
