Ferrari all the way

DO YOU have a cool R3,2 million lying around and wonder what to do with it? Well, think no further than the new Ferrari 458 Italia.

For those worried that the Ferrari design team had been smoking the "good stuff" when releasing its odd-looking California model, rest easy. The F458 is 110percent Ferrari and goes back to its roots of low-slung, kick-butt aggression on four wheels.

Launched last week at the Inanda Club in Johannesburg, thistestosterone-fuelled speedster is the stuff dreams are made of.

There was no way the people at Ferrari were going to let us get our paws on the steering wheel of this beauty but a quick rundown on its statistics and you could be excused if you think I'm talking about a Formula1 entry here.

From 0-100kmh in 3,2 seconds will produce some serious G-forces, while a top speed of 325kmh is scarily fast. And, yes, apparently they achieved this speed on a deserted stretch of road in the Kalahari used for such testing purposes.

Of course the F458 comes in Ferrari's distinctive bright red colour and those three exhausts clumped together in the rear bumper look stunning.

It's by no means small - at just under 5m long and 2m wide - but I don't think that will be a problem as this isn't the sort of car you will be popping down to the local supermarket's parking lot in.

Under the bonnet is a 4,5litre V8 engine that produces a mind-numbing 420kW and 540Nm - and uses a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Apparently the interior of the vehicle was designed by former Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher - and the steering wheel incorporates many functions previously found on the dashboard.

Ferrari only produces in the region of 6000 cars a year for the global market and according to the people at Ferrari, the small allotment of 458s for South Africa has already been snapped up by some very lucky - and rich - motorists.
