Radio station helps family

MADIBA Day has been celebrated in different ways by people throughout the world. But a Limpopo-based radio station chose to make a lasting difference to people in need. Munghana Lonene FM has restored dignity to a needy family.

The radio station celebrated Nelson Mandela's birthday by handing over a renovated house to the Mathebula family in Giyani on Sunday.

The house had been renovated in partnership with a construction company.

The roof of the dilapidated four-roomed had been blown away and some of the walls had collapsed when a storm hit the area earlier this year.

RS Construction teamed up with the radio station to renovate the house, which belongs to Doreen Mathebula. Mathebula lives with her daughter and two grandchildren. All four members of the family are mentally challenged and their only income is government grants.

"We live the values of the SABC by aligning ourselves to the vision of the company," Mungana Lonene FM station manager Tsakani Baloyi said. " We feel obliged to take care of our listeners. Over and above the quality programmes that we offer, I believe we need to build listeners' loyalty and also make our brand visible.

"We cannot expect the station to grow its numbers without going out there to make our mark.".

The station also launched the "Helping Hand" campaign this month. Through the campaign, local businesspeople have donated groceries, a stove and sofas to the Mathebula family.

Last year the radio built five houses in Limpopo and in Mpumalanga.

"That was just the beginning. On July 23 the station handed over another house to Induna Basani. We partnered with local businesspeople in our campaign.

"We will also hand over groceries to the value of R9000 to two other families as well as to a hospice in the Bungeni area.

"We intend to run the campaign on a yearly basis. Our wish is to reach as many places as possible because we know that there are needy families everywhere," Baloyi said.
