Sekgobela takes gospel to those who need it most

Even in her wildest dreams Lebo Sekgobela never fancied herself singing in a nightclub.

As a gospel singer her audience is limited and the venues she can grace are of a particular standing.

Not with the runaway success of her album Restored featuring the monster hit Lion of Judah.

A year after its release she is still riding the crest of a wave as the album reaches double platinum and the awards nominations and trophies pile up.

She is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after musicians in the land and occupies the throne as the queen of gospel.

"I have been invited to perform a gospel song at a club, at a carwash, at a concert of house music DJs and at a tombstone unveiling. I find myself performing at 3am or 6am at music festivals, I never thought I would be doing that," Sekgobela reflects.

"I have found myself to be a part of families I didn't even know. They invite me to sing at memorials of their loved ones who lived for my music and always played it. It's overwhelming to a point that I become speechless."

Last week she performed in the UK - in Manchester and Birmingham - as part of the Total Praise UK Tour 2017, and says she was amazed by how the audiences knew her music and sang along.

On the back of this success, Sekgobela stages the second leg of her national tour that has already taken her to Polokwane and East London among others.

She kick starts it tomorrow night at Pretoria State Theatre's The Opera. This will be an intimate feast for her fans as she will be on stage from 6pm to 11pm.

"The main purpose is to thank God and everyone who has supported us. The music will be from when Lebo started up to Restored and new material from the upcoming album, so we will be giving them a taste."

In the first leg, Sekgobela shares the story of a man she spotted in the audience in East London. She invited him to sing on stage with her, but the terrified man ran for the hills.

"I chased after him until I got to the foyer and brought him in to sing with me. He had been running from his talent. A few months later I heard from him that God had opened doors for him and he has recorded an album.

"I've seen God healing people and my life has changed as I understand this ministry better. People have told me about how the album helped them through the loss of their loved ones and how God restored them.

"Tomorrow night I urge everyone to come with faith that God will deliver. We are there to thank Him even for things we haven't received yet. We will fellowship together and there will be power in our unity. We're in the middle of July and we are celebrating the memory of Nelson Mandela's selflessness, we should pray for each other."

As Restored continues to churn out new hits such as Theko Ya Lona and Boholo Ba Hao, Sekgobela is guaranteed a longer reign on the throne.
