Avid listeners of Robert Marawa's sports show were subjected to music on Monday because Metro FM had failed to secure a stand-in.
Marawa's slot - between 6pm and 7.30pm - was left vacant as he attended the Naledi Theatre Awards event at Gold Reef City.
He returned on Tuesday.
SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said Metro FM could not find a stand-in on time. He neither confirmed nor denied if Metro knew in advance about Marawa's absence.
"We had a meeting, a serious meeting, involving contracts, and we did not anticipate that it will take longer. By the time we wanted to look for a replacement it was late."
Marawa said: "Ask the guys at Metro. I was on air yesterday [Tuesday], I will be there today [Wednesday] and I will be there tomorrow and any other day. Metro FM will tell you why I wasn't there on Monday but as I said, I am back on air." - Additional reporting by Julia Madibogo
