Skeem Saam actor Mlungisi Mathe is aiming for the music charts with a fresh new career in maskandi.

Mlungisi‚ who plays the role of Emkay on SABC 1’s popular soapie Skeem Saam‚ released his first single as a maskandi artist last week and has so far received plenty of support from his fans.

The actor goes by the name of “Skandi Kid” and described his music as “transitional Zulu (maskandi) with a bit of flair“.

Speaking to Drum last week‚ Mlungisi admitted that many of his fans were shocked when they learnt that he was a Maskandi artist.

“It’s a shock to many people‚ well to me it’s not a shock. Maskandi (a kind of Zulu folk music that is evolving with South African society) is my thing. I grew up in Nquthu (KZN) with my grandmother‚ siblings and cousins so we were singing maskandi‚ dancing to music of people like bab’Hhashi Elimhlophe‚ Bhekumuzi Luthuli‚ Phuzekhemisi to mention a few‚” Mlungisi told the publication.
