The Soil takes Soweto to England

A PART of Britain turned into a mini Soweto at the weekend when a cappella trio The Soil took the World of Music and Dance (Womad) festival by storm.

A PART of Britain turned into a mini Soweto at the weekend when a cappella trio The Soil took the World of Music and Dance (Womad) festival by storm.

"We did our show yesterday (Saturday) and I couldn't believe my eyes. Three thousand people came to see us; there was no longer space in the Big Red tent. People watched from outside the wings of the tent.

"The applause went on and on until we literally asked them to stop," Ntsika Ngxanga said, speaking to Sowetan from England.

Womad has been going since 1980, taking place annually in Charlton Park, England.

The Soil played on the Big Red Tent stage, in the cocktail line-up, which included acts such as US rap group De La Soul and fellow South Africans, The Mahotella Queens.

"This is the best international audience we've ever played for by far," gushed Ngxanga.

The Mahotella Queens performed on Friday.
