DJ TREASURE is set to score a career-defining feat early in his life.

The budding musicman, whose real name is Makaswana Treasure Tema, will stage his second annual one-man show next month at Lebowakgomo Stadium.

Forget turntables and a mixing board, the man has hauled out an orchestra.

"I will be mixing music while a six-piece orchestra plays," he boasts.

The 26-year-old will also record a DVD which he plans to sell independently.

He realises the mammoth task ahead. "It is a challenging experience and I'm looking forward to it."

Treasure is known to be close to DJs who have rocked festivals and clubs in Tshwane over the years.

He has notably been under the tutelage of veteran DJ Silly Bean, and is now spreading his wings out of the capital city because his potential is much bigger.

Explaining who he is outside the music box, Treasure says he was born in the village of Dithabaneng, GaMphahlele in Limpopo and moved to the township of Lebowakgomo at six.

The ecotourism student at Unisa prides himself as a one time village boy, who moved to the township and then chased his dream in the clubs of Pretoria.

His musical selection is soulful deep house and he picks the song Been So Long by Kim English as the one that best encapsulates his taste.

Detailing where it all started, Treasure says it was about contacts. "When I first came to study in Pretoria in 2007, I started collecting music," he shares.

"I ended up befriending people who worked in record shops like DJ Malankane, Silly Bean, Lehipi and the likes. They inspired me to play and I took their advice and became DJ Treasure Lenyora.

"That's the name a friend from the shops gave me, but my stage name is just DJ Treasure."

He is currently carving out an album with producer Dee Nkomo (who works under the name of Beat Monkey).

"I am an entertainer. I am a different person when I am behind the decks. People enjoy the fact that I perform while I am on stage. I do not just mix but I aim to entertain."

He is seen as one of the busier DJs in the city and he applauds how the DJs are united.

"We support each other and generally get along. There are no major conflicts and I will say that since I have been playing here, those on the scene have been welcoming.

"I have been playing outside the city and I plan to grow my reach even further.

"I have been performing in other provinces for the last couple of years and I am trying to take it as far out as possible," he says.

With his career heading upwards, Treasure will join the special ranks of DJs who have shaken off the image of being "Pretoria club DJs" such as Metro FM DJ Malwela, Casanova hitmaker DJ Choice and DJ Sumbody of the Larger than House series fame.
