Sedumedi fell in love with guitar at first try

TEBOGO Sedumedi is dispelling the notion that the bass guitar is a boy's toy.

Best known as "Aus Tebza", she is a solid bass guitar player and has travelled the world, matching the big guys in this creative industry with her talent and energy.

Her musical journey started when she was 15 years old and had already written a number of songs.

She started a band at the Mmabana Cultural Centre in Mahikeng.

"When I formed DEEVA, an all-woman band, it was a way of trying to interpret my music.

"The band didn't have a bass guitar player at the time so that's when I gave it a try. It was love at first try," she says.

After playing alongside her home boy HHP and touring abroad as a sessionist with many other musicians, she was craving to find her own identity.

Sedumedi has finally found her footing with her upcoming debut album Episodes of My Creativity.

She says that the 12-track album is "the finest piece of work and the biggest project" she has undertaken.

Episodes of My Creativity is an example of her ability as a singer and taking charge of the bass where she crafted a unique sound that appeals to the market.

Her music has varied influences and she refuses to categorise it under a specific genre.

It's no surprise to find that Sedumedi co-wrote every song.

"The album shares my experiences and travels with the people who supported me throughout and it is about who I am," she says.

"When I picked up the bass guitar I didn't want to emulate anybody. At the time I didn't even know who Fana Zulu and Bakithi Khumalo were.

"It is such a privilege to have travelled the world and an honour to be part of big productions. I am grateful for that."

The self-taught bassist who completes her band with herflawless sound says: "I have written music from an early age and this album is going to surprise a lot of people."
