KWELA Tebza, the penny-whistle trio of brothers, have achieved a musical feat few musicians can brag about.

The Sowetans have collaborated with Nigerian artist Femi Kuti, and will soon fly out to the US for other collaborations for their upcoming album due for release next year.

"It's something we've been working on since last year," Tebogo Lerole, one of the brothers, said of their collaboration with the eldest son of legendary Nigerian Afrobeat musician Fela Kuti that they recorded earlier this month.

Enthused Lerole: "He was everything we expected. I was in awe."

They spent half the day with Kuti, and Lerole said they gelled as soon as they began recording.

The result is a thumping song titled Nhlanhla. "We're asking for inhlanhla (luck)."

Kuti's contribution is a solo saxophone and vocals as he sings about African issues such as ebola.

Lerole said the song also features house music duo Black Motion.

Nhlanhla will be available for download next week.
