Fans have all night gig

THE Tribute to SA Music Heroes Concert at Moretele Park in Mamelodi, Pretoria, lived up to the euphoria associated with it.

The event proved yet again over the weekend that it was more than just a music festival.

As early as 9am on Saturday, scores of jubilant fans were seen marching down the streets with cooler-boxes and food in hand.

The festival, now in its 17th year, opened its doors at 11am but revellers arrived early to get parking space and a nice seating spot under the sun.

The popular music festival also heralds the beginning of spring and the warm weather was perfect for the colourful outfits fans were wearing.

For the ladies, the hemlines were more daring while men added a touch of the fedora hats and the sunglasses to theiroutfits.

The nights at Moretele though can get extremely cold as the park itself lies near a river.

Warm or cold, the festivities go on and this year more than 20000 fans had fun from 11am on Saturday until Sunday morning.

With a line-up of more than 20 artists this year, the party started at 1pm with crowd favourites Lira and Mi Casa performing in succession.

The line-up also included Don Laka, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Ringo Madlingozi, Johnny Clegg, Jonas Gwangwa, Letta Mbulu and Caiphus Semenya and, for the young at heart, DJs Sbu and Fresh where ready to get everyone on their toes.

Speaking to Sowetan, fans said they loved the atmosphere, the music, the picnics and the smell of braais.

While braai stands are not allowed at the park, carnivores alike can take their meat to a designated braaing area which is always under the event management's control.

Nandi Maseko, 23, who brought her mother Khuselwa along, said she loved the Music Heroes Concert concept because it caters for all ages.

Trevor Tshabalala, 38, said it was an event to celebrate both spring and local musicians.

As for the ones with better connections, the various VIP marquees lived up to expectations. As is the case, sumptuous dishes were served and the golden nectar was flowing.

Back to the main stage at about sunset, the likes of Clegg and Madlingozi wooed the revellers with their sing-along hits. By midnight, it was the turn of Mafikizola and Zonke to bring the park down.

Sober and sloshed, the crowd partied until after 2am when the DJs took it to another level.
