Another strike for Generations actors

Generations cast on a standstill, as they continue October 2013 strike for better working contracts, salary increase and royalty remunerations promised by the SABC.

It seems being rated the most watched soapie in South Africa has not kept Generations from all the drama that comes with a workplace environment.

The team of actors are reportedly up in arms and have been on a serious strike since Monday.

According to a letter issued by Dreamcatcher on behalf of Generations Actors Guild, 16 members of the cast crew are striking for better salaries.

Lead actors such as Menzi Ngubane, Sophie Ndaba, Zenande Mfenyane, Winnie Nsthaba and Seputla Sebogodi amongst others have no intentions of returning to work until their needs are met.

According to the statement Generations cast has sited failure of addressing issues as one of the reasons for striking.

“We are essentially in exactly the same position we were in last October when we first went on strike.

“Nothing has been resolved, we came back to work after the first strike in good faith, understanding that all issues would be brought up to be addressed by the SABC this past March-a date they set.”

“Since then, they have missed their own deadline, with no disenable resolution to our grievances in sight.”

In the letter they also make mention of Dismissal threats:

“Instead, we’ve been ordered back to work and threatened with dismissal, with no explanation of why our issues have not been resolved.”

Other issues which were raised by the staff are:

• Cast members to receive a 3 year contract

• Another issue is the payment of royalties and syndication fees for episodes of Generations that are broadcast in various countries worldwide as per contractual agreement and international best practice.

The cast also want:

• MMSV productions and SABC to review the payment rates, rationalize and bring them in line with industry standards and norms

Bulelani Mzamo, the cast legal representative adds:

“There are a number of issues that caused this strike, and the cast understood that some would require long-term responses, whilst others could be resolved within the timelines that the SABC themselves set.”

Other popular casts not backing down without a fight from the famous soapie  include:

Anga Makubalo (MJ), Atandwa Kani (Samora), Katlego Danke (Dineo), Mandla Gaduka(Choppa), Thami Mnqolo (Senzo), Nambitha Mpulwana (Mawande), Patrick Shai (Patrick), Slindile Nodangala (RubyThato Molamu (Nicholas), Winnie Ntshaba (Khetiwe), Zikhona Sodlaka (Priska) and Zolisa Xaluva (Jason).
