INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed singer Lira will celebrate Africa Day with a performance at Bassline today.

Lira is the headline act for the first day of Africa Day celebrations, while Thandiswa Mazwai is earmarked to headline the Saturday show.

"Africa Day is a day to commemorate African unity and a day for us to take pride in ourselves as a continent and as a people. It's a way for us to celebrate the uniqueness of who we are and how far we have come," she says.

Though she acknowledges that the day is not popular particularly among the youth, she says to make the day important people need to be more tolerant and accepting of all people of Africa.

Another show celebrating Africa Day is the third annual Sanaa Africa Arts Festival taking place at the Wits Theatre in Braamfontein, from May 23 to 26.

Sanaa means to create from your heritage in Swahili, and the activities comprise of a fashion show, poetry, film screenings, theatre plays and a music concert with The Muffinz, The Soil and Khuli Chana tomorrow.

The festival's founder and director Nonhlanhla Matshazi says the arts must be celebrated. "I started the festival because I am p3assionate about the arts and the creative industry. It is also a way to give artists a platform to showcase their talent and an economic empowerment platform for all the service providers," says Matshazi.

She adds that the other factor is to connect the South African creative industry with the rest of Africa and the world. -motaud@sowetan.co.za
