MOVIE REVIEW: Brave

DON'T you sometimes feel sorry for the little ones because they are lied to at a tender age and labelled with all kinds of coy references such as "princess"?

That said, Brave is an animated movie for kids who can still be lied to - and will believe what you say. And you can stop reading this review right now because clearly you're not the target - unless you're doing it on behalf of your kids.

As I always say, when it comes to animated kiddies' movies the storyline can neither be great, awful, good nor bad.

The secret is in the exaggerated magical animation, along with the swooshing effects and voices that vary from sweet to brutal and witch-like, and so on.

There's only one reason why kiddies' movies (or any movie) are made: to make money. Teaching the kids lessons of life comes second. Truth hurts.

In the Brave the fantasy of princes, princesses and kings comes to life and, yes, there is a lesson that Princess Merida must always listen to her mother and that at the end of all the rebelling she's her offspring.

Merida is the daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. The family is attacked by a demon bear named Mor'du and survives it (or did they?).

Merida seems to have a problem accepting her mother's assertions that she (Merida) must get hitched to a man from one of the neighbouring clans in order to save her father's kingdom from ruin.

Merida, the sister of three identical triplet brothers, says that as she is eldest she has a right to choose her suitor.

That creates a rift between her and her mother and Merida leaves her home in anger and heads for the bush, where an evil witch gives her a treacherous cake that's supposed to turn her mother into a giant bear.

After her mother is made to eat the cake she turns into a giant bear instead. The bear spell, which will remain permanent if not eliminated urgently, will result in their mother posing a grave danger to the family. In fact, she almost mauls her husband, King Fergus, into shreds.

It will take a miracle - and a lot of help from her brothers - to defeat the spell and bring her mother back to humanity.

Merida's looks are quite an innovation - she has big curls - and yet she has a pale face. I'm not sure if she qualifies as a beaut in my books, but then, again, I'm not a kid.

Nevertheless, your kids will be in paradise when they watch Brave. Don't deny them.
