BEAUTIFUL VOICES: The gospel choir

Choir so popular with ZCC members

IN ITS seventh album titled O tla lla o tlare yo, ZCC traditional gospel music choir Wacha Mkhukhu refreshingly captures the original sound and spirit of Mkhukhu.

Led by the seasoned mkhukhu singer Charles Nkosana Kodi, this 33-member choir has mesmerised gospel followers with its music.

Wacha Mkhukhu is a top-selling, popular and famous mkhukhu choir.

Kodi believes that the choir has been thriving since its inception because of the huge support it gets from members of the Zion Christian Church.

He says the group's project, O tla lla o tlare yo, has a strong message for people who have lost hope, while also advising people to trust in prayer.

"When people are in trouble, they complain and let everyone know about their suffering, instead of trusting in God and asking Him for help," Kodi says.

"People should rather pray because that is the way to communicate with God. People should always remember that everything has its time."

When composing songs, Kodi uses the Bible as his inspiration. He says that he usually picks a verse and then creates a song out of the verse. He also mentions that the group always makes sure that their music changes people for the better.

"The songs that we select are those traditional hymns and choruses that we normally sing during our Saturday night vigils and Sunday praise sessions," Kodi says.

On the track Uzoba Shaya, the group warns sinners: "God will hit you with an invisible stick when you drink and gamble in the place of worship".

Kodi was born in Tembisa in Gauteng' s East Rand. Together with the late Mojeremane, they helped to develop and popularise mkhukhu dancing and singing in the 1980s. This form of worship is still practised today.

Apart from the Wacha Mkhukhu concept, Kodi also sings and composes music for his other groups - Stocks and Stocks, Nkosana, Sisters In Christ, The Rock and Bafana Ba Mino.
